The RSPCA today marked World Animal Day by releasing its national statistics for the 2002 to 2003 financial year.

Commenting on the significance of World Animal Day... Dr Wirth said there had been significant improvements in animal welfare in Australia in recent decades. “Decisions such as the recently announced national ban on cosmetic tail-docking of dogs are evidence of this.”
“On the other hand, we have deplorable situations such as the fate of the sheep on the Cormo Express, still stranded in the Middle East. Although things have improved for animals we still have a long, long way to go, particularly when it comes to conditions to which farm animals are subjected
